Life is just filled with surprises. Sometimes I think that just maybe there are more than my share of surprises coming my way. Just when the weather started to warm, things did not feel right when I sat down for supper. Yes, it was time for one of those surprises, "Sue I do not feel very good I am going to lay down". I lay down and then "Sue, please call 911". Once again I get rolled into the ER at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, and after a few hours of tests. I was given a room on the second floor. You know you have been hospitalized too much when all the nurses know you. The Candleguy is home and doing better. Yes, I will start to pour candles tomorrow. What fragrance, a beautiful smelling white natural palm wax pillar scented Gardenia. Look for it in my store along with a Sand Pot Candle filled with natural palm wax and scented with a very aromatic Lilac.

Donald, what is happening?

Donald has had a holiday season that will not end. Donald is making candles as fast as he can. Customers are using the message system, and emailing him directly with special orders. Donald, will accommodate customers any time they knock on the door. The store will eventually be stocked, and new candles will appear. Right now, the orders for candles are taking replacement candles as fast as he can make them. Its okay, if you need a specific candle just contact him. He will be there, making candles. Donald is very happy with the support customers have given him. He wishes everyone a good year ahead, and a Thank You to all his customers.

Just a Little Too Cold For The Candleguy821

After more than a few is way to many cold nights and cool days. Donald was able to pour some natural palm wax pillar candles. Today the temperature nudged its way just past the 70 mark to 73. The forecast for Tuesday is partly cloudy with the temperature going to an absolutely balmy level of 75 - 76 degrees F. Why the concern over a few degrees? The rate that the melted palm wax cools plays a key role in how much crystallization takes place within the surface area of a nice Candles by Donald pillar. Donald takes steps to get unique surface patterns during the Winter months in his outdoor studio.
For example:
1.) pouring at the high end of the recommended pour range.
2.) preheat the mold just prior to filling the mold.

3.) set the candle mold on a wooden block with
a circular hole slightly smaller than the
candle diameter cut in the block.

4.) set a clear or translucent hood over the
candles once the top of the candles have

cooled. Don't forget the small pouring pot
with the remainder of the hot wax in

it. Every little bit helps to slow the cooling
down.

Just A Few Warm Days

Here in central Florida, we had a few warm days. Yes, Donald was able to pour some candles. You are probably thinking, when? and how many. Candle purchases continue with tremendous support for Donald's work. Customer demand for his beautiful candles has made him very happy. During the few days warm enough to pour, Donald made a few Lavender, Cinnamon Bread Pudding and Butter-cream Crunch.

Too Cold To Pour

For the last two days the outside temperature has been below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to cause the palm wax to crystallize while cooling in the pillar mold. The outside temp needs to be high enough to slow the cooling of the wax while in the mold. I have found that pouring when the temperature is bellow 70 is a waste of time. Both the chandler and the the palm wax react more positively when the out side temperature is above 70. I hope to start pouring again the next 2 days. This is the time to make sand pots. If the sand is not moist enough, use hot water to moisten and bring the sand temperature up a little. The warm sand will allow the 350 degree paraffin wax to seep through the sand creating a wall before it cools. Too understand the sand pot process see the video here:

For a Chandler the Christmas season is the busiest time of year. This was the case for Donald, chandler at Candles by Donald. His company is small with only one employee, but that does not minimize the joy he feels while reading the happy e-mails from customers. Donald wishes to extend a hearty thank you to all customers who have enjoyed his beautiful candles. He will continue as long as his health allows to bring a high quality product at a reasonable price. A candle that you will not hesitate to give as a gift to friends and family members. Donald has a long list of fragrance options for customers to choose from. This will continue with a few new scents added to the list each year. Vanilla Extract is a new scent soon to appear on the shelves at Candles by Donald. For those of you who have enjoyed Cinnamon Bread Pudding scented candles, the fragrance is back. I have been very busy making candles and taking photos. Did I mention locating and purchasing new awesome fragrance oils. The latest just arrived today, Friday, and it is called Southern Magnolia. I will pour these tomorrow Saturday, and take photos as soon as they cool. The scent, so clean, refreshing, and so Magnolia, WOW!! I love my job. This is the real thing, just like the big flowers in the trees so common here in the South.

This is it!!!! WOW, if this isn't the best bakery scent I have poured, believe me this one, beats them all. The approximately one pound natural palm wax pillar candle is colored a vibrant yellow. The fragrance Christmas Cinnamon Bread Pudding is best described as a creamy vanilla blended with, nutty walnut, sweet cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey to create this spectacular scent. Pouring these awesome fragrances is by far the best part of making pillar candles. I get so hungry sometimes, when there is nothing to eat that compares to the scent I am pouring "oh, the humanity," just joking around. This is a great scent for the holidays, and actually any time of year this one is fantastic.

Thursday the warm up did not come, the temperature was just too cold to pour. Friday things were different, I started in as soon as I came back from seeing my heart Doctor. Yes, I am sick complements of the agent orange that was sprayed everywhere is Vietnam. Its okay, What I did made a difference, saving many American lives. My curiosity bested my plan, and I decided to pour Alchemists Blend, the new synergy blend in town.

As you can see the candles came out beautiful. This is a synergy blend of essential oil. The oils from fir, eucalyptus, and pine oils were blended together in just the right proportions. The blend is fantastic for relieving stuffed noses and congestion.

I have decided to provide customers with the name of the scented candle that I am pouring on a given day along with a description of that fragrance.
Sunday 11/27/2011 - Frankincense and Myrrh
I will be pouring the star-burst blend of palm wax (Bittercreek candle supply, Inc. my supplier calls this a feather blend) no matter what you call it the surface crystal patterns are beautiful.
Frankincense and Myrrh is best described as an enchanting aromatic blend of frankincense and myrrh with hints of balsam, spice, patchouli and sandalwood. This candle fragrance is infused with essential oils.

The pour on Monday went very well as you can see by the photos. Tuesday I was unable to walk, even assisted by my walker. I had so much fluid on my knee causing movement to be quit painful. The best cure was rest with my knee raised higher than my heart and heat on the knee. Wednesday, I was better, but the knee was still a problem. So I listed the Frankincense and Myrrh pillar. Wednesday a cold front moved into our area making palm wax candle making impossible. I feel better my knee feels much better. A new fragrance arrived on Tuesday, and I am anxious to pour it. So Apple Barrel will get moved to Friday and today I will pour the newbie.

A New Look For Donald's Natural Palm Wax Pillar Candles

I had to change wax suppliers and the new natural palm wax has a new look for Candles by Donald palm wax pillar candles. The wax supplier I have used for the last few years has made a business decision to not carry palm wax any more. I thought I would be forced to raise my prices in order to obtain a replacement wax equal in quality. Now it was time for me to make a business decision. Rather than raise my prices I decided to use the only wax priced relatively the same as the previous suppliers wax (wax price plus shipping). One thing for sure, the new wax would have to be equal or better quality. The new wax is of equal quality, but a radically different appearance. I describe this wax surface appearance much like a pane glass window after "Jack Frost' has paid a visit. The new supplier is Bitter Creek North Candle Supply Inc. from Ashland Wisconsin. I have used 110 pounds of this wax to date and have experienced no problems making the same high quality natural palm wax pillar candles, but now with a very different look. I am very thankful I do not have to raise my prices. I will show off the new Celtic Moonspice and let you be the judge.

Hello pillar candle lovers, there has been a busy chandler at Candles by Donald, me. We have some new fragrances, Blueberry Muffin, Creamy Cinnamon Vanilla, English Garden, Jasmine, and Magnolia. We also have a new category of pillars, 4 inch diameter. This translates into a much larger candle than the 3 inch diameter. The candle has a larger wax pool, and the candle has much more surface area. The increase in size for the wax pool will allow that much more fragrance to be dispersed into the air as the pillar candle burns. This will give the candle greater hot throw. The increase in size for the candle will expose more candle surface area to the air. This will give the candle an increase in cold throw, since more candle area is exposed. Last but not least Candles by Donald now carries a selection of votives in stock. I also encourage you the customer to ask for any color and/or fragrance, and I will make some votives just the way you want.

Keeps Bugs Away replaces the Great Outdoors Candle

Some people may be asking, "What happened to the Great Outdoors Candle?" I decided to change the formulae slightly. The change makes the candle a little easier to manufacture and improves the mosquito repelling properties. I have increased the size of the candlewick and the diameter of the candle as well. The candle is still 4 1/2 inches tall, but now the diameter has increased a full inch to 4 inches. The name of the candle also changed, the new name is Keeps Bugs Away. The increase in wick size will disperse more of that bug-repelling aroma and the contributing wax pool size will increase. I like the way the new candle burns, and feel comfortable that the customer will as well. Yes, the price increased, the increase in wax and essential oils forced me to raise the price. I still use the same high quality ingredients, just more of them. Here is how the actual listing reads:

For sale is a bug repelling all natural candle, scented with the essential oils, Lemongrass, Cedarwood, and Eucalyptus. The handmade natural palm wax pillar candle is called Keeps Bugs Away. This is a bigger than usual pillar for Candles by Donald measuring 4 inches in diameter and 4 1/2 inches tall. The 1 pound 10 ounce bright orange candle is fragranced to the maximum of 6 % by weight as recommended by the palm wax distributer. The wick is the correct size for this candle and performs perfectly by gradually increasing the wax pool diameter each time you burn the candle. The candle will tunnel for a while which will create a lantern effect as the candle burns down. At around the halfway point, the top of the tunnel wall will begin to erode becoming consumed by the candle. This candle will burn longer each time you light it than the 3 inch diameter pillar candle. My recommendation is the check the candle at 2 1/2 hours, and then you decide how much longer for this lighting. One important thing to remember, do not allow the wax pool to break through the sidewall of the pillar. Keep the wick centered and place the candle in an area absent of drafts. Accidents happen so be sure to use a proper pillar plate or saucer when burning this candle. Does the candle work? Yes, the candle works well providing the area is not too big, and there is little or no wind. Using two or more candles will give you better results when the area is larger. The scent though unpleasant for the insects is light, fresh, lemony, and clean smelling to candle lovers. All candles are shipped using the Priority Mail System 2 to 3 Day offered by the USPS. 1.Carefully remove shrink wrapping from the candle before burning. Insure that the wick is cut to approximately 3/16 to 1/4 inches before lighting candle.
2.Always use heavy duty(just a little thicker glass)votive candleholder when burning a votive candle. Palm wax burns slightly hotter than paraffin wax.
3.Keep the wick centered allowing the candle to burn even.
4.Burn candle in an area absent of drafts. Drafts cause the candle to burn wildly and out of control. Fans, open windows, air conditioning or heating vents, can cause drafts.
5.Keep the wax pool area absent of debris. This debris will choke and clog the wick causing it to burn in an irregular manner.
6.Prior to lighting the candle trim the wick if needed; a wick that is to long will cause the candle to smoke. All the things I have mentioned shorten the burn times and make a mess.
In closing the most important safety suggestion is NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED

The votives arrived at Candles by Donald very quietly. With a spending freeze here at Donald's place, we were unable to hire a band and serve refreshments. Just the same, they are here, four new products that look, and smell fantastic. Did someone say "roll call", here it is Neroli, Dragon's Blood, Lavender, and Bird of Paradise. In detail follows:

I am almost ready to list the Bird of Paradise votives. There are always the little things that turn out to be much more work than expected. The holdup turned out to be a small warning label, and shrink wrapping. Both of these items are on there way and should arrive on Thursday or Friday. I will take more photos to complete the listing tomorrow. The first 9 votives are done and they smell great. I am burning a Bird of Paradise scented votive and it smells fantastic. All of the candles in this batch (10 votives) wiegh greater than 2 ounces (2.1-2.15 ounces). Burn times exceed 15 hours and the candle burns clean.

As I have said before, I listen to customers. Its true, I have decided to make and sell palm wax votives at Candles by Donald. The new votive candles will use the same natural palm wax I use for pillar candles, and the same premium candle fragrance and essential oils I use in pillar candles. All votives will be 2 ounces plus a little and will be priced fairly. My introductory pricing will be $.90 each with a price break occurring @ 6 -11 these will be introductory priced @ $.85 each, and 12 + candles introductory priced @ $ .80 each. After the introduction period is over I will raise the price slightly to a level that is fair to the customer and I. I will offer votives in the following scents:

You may have smelled this fragrance while shopping at a new age store or herb shop. Dragons Blood candle fragrance oil has an aroma like an oriental blend of orange, rose, and carnation nestled on a warm dry down of patchouli.

Votive is scented with the essential oil made from eucalyptus leafs. Eucalyptus essential oil is the essence of the plant itself.

3. Celtic Moonspice

9. Macintosh Apples

A strong classic fragrance described as like the aroma from Macintosh apples right from the tree. The manufacturer has said that this premium fragrance oil was two years in the making; they wanted a true Macintosh Apple scent. I say, they did it! One customer actually tasted the candle, yes the candle really does smell that good.

10. Buttercream Crunch

The smell is strong enough to make your guests hungry without being overpowering or heavy. It is described by the manufacturer as the aroma of a fresh baked butter crunch with creamy coconut, sugary sweet maple, and rich butter. I think the candle has a wonderful sweet butterscotch smell, buttery with a very light coconut, maple and vanilla presence. I am sure there is much more to this complex fragrance with its heart of fresh ginger, nutmeg, and decadent cocoa.

Candles by Donald Safety Guidelines for Burning Palm Wax Pillars

Candles by Donald has an updated candle burning and safety instruction sheet.These will be provided with every purchase. It has always been my position that safety comes first when burning candles. If there is anything I should add, please let me know and we will add the guideline to this group.
1. Carefully remove shrink wrapping from the candle before burning. Insure that the wick is cut to approximately 3/16 to 1/4 inches before lighting the candle.
2. Always use a pillar candle holder, stand, or plate when burning a pillar candle.Avoid wax spill problems, always use a candle dish.
3. A general rule is burn a paraffin candle 1 hour per inch diameter. For example burn a 3 inch diameter pillar for approximately 3 hours or less. Always extinguish candle before flame causes breakthrough in the candle wax pool wall.
*** A general rule for Palm Wax candles is to burn the candle 50 minutes per inch of diameter or for a 3 inch diameter 2 1/2 hours. This is a maximum, as palm wax candles do not have a memory there is no minimum time to burn them. With a palm wax pillar the idea is to cause the candle to "tunnel" or form a wall around the flame. This will set the candle up for a lantern effect with the flame shinning through the crystal laden walls.
4. Keep the wick centered allowing the candle to burn even. A centered wick is extremely important when burning a palm wax pillar candle. Adjust wick position to cause an even thickness wax pool wall. When burning pillar candles this will maximize the burn time and increase the candles efficiency.
5. Burn candles in areas free of drafts. Drafts cause the candle to burn wildly and out of control. Drafts can be caused by fans, open windows, air conditioning or heating vents.
6. Keep the wax pool area free of debris. This debris will choke and clog the wick causing it to burn in an irregular manner.
7. Prior to lighting the candle trim the wick if needed; a wick that is to long will cause the candle to smoke. All the things I have mentioned when not dealt with in an appropriate manner, shorten the burn times and make a mess.
8. Keep your candle clean. Both palm and paraffin wax candles can be cleaned using a damp soft cloth or paper towel. Simply wipe the soiled surfaces clean.
9. In closing the most important safety suggestion is:
NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED.

We love natural candles. Palm wax, soy wax, each of these waxes has its benefits. In common they share a few very good qualities.
1.All these waxes will burn cleanly and will not release harmful soot, black toxic smoke or CO2 into the air, as breathing this over period of time can be unhealthy. Black smoke and soot can also discolour walls, curtains and furniture.
2.The wick will not drown in the natural waxes.
3.We use high level of scent, so your candles will scent the room beautifully even before you light the candles. With the bees wax candles, we do not add any scents. We like the way they release natural honey scent when they burn.
4.Bees wax candles by the act of ionisation, act as air purifiers.
5.All natural candles burn significantly longer then paraffin candles of the same size.
6.Palm wax candles are the perfect pillars. The wax is very firm and will not melt in the sun. The candles do not need memory burning and you can burn them as often and as long as you wish. By trimming the wick when the wall of the candle becomes thin and transparent, you can eliminate any spillages.
7.Soy wax candles are housed in containers. It is a much softer wax and it burns in a much lower temperature. The melted wax will not burn the skin and is great where there are children to consider. You can even dip your finger in the wax and rub it on your hands as a moisturiser.

On schedule I opened my studio on March 1st. I made 3 Blueberry Muffin candles on the same day. I was tired from making the candles; this was the first time I did any candle work since Dec. 3rd the day I was taken to the hospital. I have to say it was a good tired that I felt as the candles came out beautiful. I have had 2 good orders since the doors opened again. The sales have depleted my inventory, thats okay, now I get to make more candles. Since I make only 3 candles a day, be patient, inventory will increase as time go on. I can remember when I was a boy, Mom and Dad would dress my brother and I extra warm and we would get in the family car for a drive. A drive to my parents favorite place to buy a Christmas tree, and sometimes the second and third favorite places came into the search. Some years the "perfect" tree was not easy to find. What is the definition of a perfect tree? Now that is an easy question to answer. The "perfect" Christmas tree was the tree my Mother liked best. Weather played an important role in the search, warmer evening temperatures meant a much longer quest. These were the days when just about everyone had a real tree, artificial trees were much more expensive and not popular. The Christmas tree lots were large and there were hundreds of trees to choose from. These tree emporiums had traditional holiday music playing or actually being played. Some lots even had hot apple cider and chocolate. The one thing common to all of my parents favorite places was the smell of pine from the freshly cut trees. Today things are much different, and it is the artificial tree that has gained in popularity as the cost of a real tree rises. It seems that everyone likes that pine smell during the Holidays. One way to add that scent to your indoor environment is to add a pillar candle to your home decor. No ordinary candle will do, it must be scented with pine. The selection of trees years ago was not limited to one kind of tree but a few varieties. Balsam, Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir, Blue Spruce and Northern Pines are probably the most popular. The more accurate duplication of the "tree lot" fragrance is really a blend like Rocky Mountain Christmas candle fragrance oil. I have looked for a simple, but not so simple Christmas tree fragrance for the last 3 years. Although I came close my search for the elusive oil fell short of capturing the essence of the Christmas tree lot. For each of us a Christmas tree may smell different in our minds. This would depend on the tree we were used to while growing up. The tree, was it a Scotch Pine, a Douglas Fir, a Northern Pine or maybe a Blue Spruce? The fragrance oil Rocky Mountain Christmas is a blend of all these aromas set on top of a warm woody base. It is this fragrance blend that may serve to satisfy our memories and remind us of Christmas past.

The Sand Pot Candle Has Returned To Candles by Donald

Pre-market testing complete it is time for the Sand Pot Candle to make its debut. After much work to develop an all-natural version of the sand pot failed, I decided to bring back the paraffin version of the sand pot. A new improved version has completed pre-market testing. The new version boasts a markedly increased sidewall thickness as well as a wick attachment to the inside bottom of the sand pot. The Sand Pot Candle is comprised of the new improved sand pot filled with an all-natural container blend of palm wax. Each sand pot is cast from highly refined paraffin wax poured at a temperature of 350 degrees (F) into a mold made in moist fine sand. Before the hot wax completely cools, it is removed from the mold forming the inside of the sand pot. The sidewalls are made from the hot wax that seeps into the sand surrounding the mold and cools. The rough pot shape is removed from the sand box and the process of sculpting the final shape begins. After hours of carving, the final sand pot is painted with non-toxic acrylic paint, and filled with scented palm wax. This is a brief description of the process used to make a single sand pot candle. Each candle is a one of a kind creation and a work of art.

A Day at the Craft Fair

Saturday, a day I patiently waited for. Today is the day of the virtual Country Craft Fair featuring talented artisans from places near and far away. Forecasters predicted crisp clean air and pleasant comfortable temperatures for this mostly sunny day. It is perfect weather for looking at the beautiful handmade creations while walking from one artisan's booth to another. You never know I might even find some special gifts for the fast approaching holidays.

I think I may be one of the first ones here, but as I looked back, the parking lot was filling up fast. The crafts people worked hard they earned a break in the weather and received it. Admission was $2.00 to cover costs of running the fair, a very reasonable fee in my opinion. This is a very big event, as I looked across the fields ahead at the many booths and artisans eager to show off their works. There had to be an acre of tent-covered tables comfortably spaced across the close cut green field grass. Several large trees served to add shade, and contribute to the wonderful Country Craft fair ambiance.

After walking by several craft displays, something caught my eye as I approached the booth of Elektra Jewelry Designs, displayed amid an array of unique jewelry the likes of which I had not seen in a long time, was a stunning bracelet. A card under the bracelet display stand had printed on it this description: A very fancy jeweled cuff, handmade with 12-gauge sterling silver wire, and smothered with pearls, rose quartz, silver spacers, and Swarovski crystal. As I gazed at the beautiful work, the Artisan greeted me and offered to model the bracelet for a couple of photographs.

"The work is beautiful," I said as my glazed over eyes stared at the piece. The woman introduced herself and told me the sad story of her camera breaking. She mentioned that I could get the piece later on by contacting her through the Etsy On-line store using the "Contact Artisan" feature.

While she was setting the beautiful jeweled cuff on its display stand, a pair of earrings, "oh, these are very pretty, the luster and color is amazing" I said. I snapped a couple photos for later reference. A small card under the display stand, described the earrings as a pair of peach drop pearl earrings, hung on gold vermeil caps and ear wires.

"Dina I enjoyed your booth, but there is much more to see," I said while carefully storing her business card in my camera bag. Elektra Jewelry Designs is a store I will visit again while shopping from my computer I thought as I turned toward the next booth on my list.

Opps, I have to stop here first, an unbelievable assortment of smells pulled me toward the Soapy Blessings booth. "Look at all these handmade soaps, got to have some," I said to myself. A lovely person walked over and introduced herself, "I am Patricia, you look like you need a little help to locate the source of a particular smell," she said. "Yes, I smell cranberries, which one of these" I said, as she handed me a round piece of soap saying, "try this one, Cranberry Orange Spice Soap". I read the label under the display plate; the soap has a cranberry fragrance mixed with orange essential oil, a touch of musk, sandalwood, and moss to give a sweet smell with subtle woodsy undertones.

"Yes perfect, please wrap a bar up and one of these also", I said while pointing at the dish with the printed tag Irish Cream Soap under it. Printed neatly on the tag, were these words "handmade soap using the dessert wine Irish Country Cream fragrance that is mixed with a small amount of Creme Brulee for extra richness."

The soap, I could smell the Irish Cream from where I was standing outside the booth. What a great way to start your day, a nice hot shower using one of these elegant soaps from Soapy Blessings to relax and get ready for the world.

Thanking Patricia for the fantastic soaps, I walked along the row of artisan displays until I saw a most interesting display of unusual candles at Valerie's Essentials, along with some free tootsie rolls and mints. Look at this candle, it is a scented candle, but more than that, it is a fish bowl with glass seaweed and a glassfish with real seashells all embedded in this clear wax called Gel. The booth had row upon row with gel candles having different themes. Some had no fish at all, but beautiful seashells imbedded in the gel. There was even one for golfers. The Artisan was busy with another customer so I took the time to look around the candle filled booth.

When it comes to desserts, I have no resistance. One of my favorite sweet treats is strawberry shortcake. Without a doubt, I am a strawberry shortcake eating fool. Poised dangerously close to me was a dish of strawberry shortcake. As I slinked closer the strawberry scent tantalized my olfactory senses. OH NO! The strawberry shortcake was a candle made from paraffin and gel waxes.

The candle maker finished up with the other customer just in time to see the disappointed look on my face. She smiled and introduced herself as Valerie. "I must have have one of those candles," I said while pointing at the candle. We talked a little about the candle as she wrapped it up for me. She mentioned another candle maker's booth I should visit while at the fair, Candles by Donald. I said I would try, as I waved goodbye, and continued up this little grassy rise toward another booth on my list to visit.

"Ah, here it is, LindaButterfly Cards and Art," I thought, then “Look at all these cards”, I said quietly to myself. “Sir, what did you say”, said a voice with a British accent from behind the display. “There are so many cards” I said. “Yes, I try to provide a good selection, something for every occasion”, she replied, as she appeared in front of me, this woman with a big warm smile. “Hello, I am Linda”, she greeted me. “Is there something special you need or would you like to just look around?” “Just one question; all of the cards I have looked at are beautiful on the outside, but with no writing on the inside, why?” “Good question, the card cover has different meanings. This way each person who buys a card can write something appropriate to the occasion at hand. Possibly to convey a meaningful personal message or recount some past experience”. She paused a moment, “The individual can make a card so much more than just a card. Look around, enjoy looking at the cards, ask and I will help you.” I had already made my selection, "Linda, I want to look over in the LindaCaterpillar section of your booth, will you wrap these two cards up for me". I paused a moment then said,"Yes, one Winter Fir Trees greeting card, and one Frosty Ground greeting card".

Linda's booth was divided into two sections, I was in the LindaCaterpillar section now. This section is devoted to artworks done in acrylic, watercolor, pastels, and much more. I looked at the acrylics first; while looking, a painting named Dancing Tree captured my attention in a special way. From the acrylics I shifted my gaze to the pastels where a work titled Trees by the Lake moved me, but "I like all of Linda's Art", I thought. I asked first, then took these pictures to share with you. "Linda, I have to leave your wonderful booth, it is clear to me I need much more time." We said our goodbyes and she gave me her business card with her on-line store addresses on the front, LindaCaterpillar and LindaButterfly Cards and Art.

The next booth on my list was just ahead. Oh, this looks like fun, Custom Clothing and Costumes for You, the banner over the booth read. Look at all the costumes, Luke Skywalker, Snow White, Sheriff Woody, Jessie the cowgirl, Oompa Loompa, and so many more. All the props needed to take a kid well into a "make pretend world", AND all the props needed to take an adult well into a "make pretend world"; why should kids have all the fun. More than just costumes, this is handmade quality clothing. I asked the woman who designs and makes all of this beautiful clothing if I could take some photos to share. Here are a few teasers:

I left the costume booth with a smile and crossed over the grassy field to another row of booths. The colors here abound as each tent roof perimeter is lined with triangular flags, and the booth front displaying a large banner with the store name, and logo. The tables covered with colored cloths and lined with ribbons, all designed to attract the attention of a potential buyer. The day continued to be pleasant with good lighting for numerous photo opportunities.

I think I will visit my friend Shelly, her booth Handmade Creations by Shelly is just a head. Shelly was very happy to see me, and put together an incredible display of handmade items. We started at a corner table where she talked about each item in this grouping of different crocheted designs, and all the time knitting a scarf. Shelly loves to knit and there is hardly a time when she is not knitting something. While looking at all the items she had knitted and crocheted, I noticed a beautiful book or album cover.

This is a very nice way to display the photo album on the coffee table. Next to the crochet album/book cover was a hand knitted felted tote bag. There were small pouches and bags that would work well with anything that fit into them. The selection seemed endless as we walked around the booth, I saw scarf's, hats, gloves, ponchos, caplets, purses, felted bags and designer collections.

I took a few photos and said my goodbyes. The day was going fast, with the sun already getting low on the horizon.
I wanted to visit Susan's booth just ahead on the left, ah there it is near that big tree. Her banner with shop name in big colorful letters, Susanneedlehands is displayed in the front of her booth. Susan loves to sew, knit, and do crafts. The tables, piled high with felted bowls, felted plates, scarves, knit bags, water bottle carriers, and even a teddy bear looked beautiful.

Her shop is non-profit with all the money going to various charities that can always use some cash. I could not stay long, time was not on my side I said goodbye to Susan and headed to a booth close to the exit.

This would be my last stop, I was hungry and tired, but so happy to have spent some time looking at crafts, taking pictures, and just being outside on this beautiful day. It was time to meet Kelsi and Ryan, the booth Kelsilove, like the store is a collection of everything. Many of the items are made from recycled materials, something I love to see. Kelsi greeted me while modeling her Soft Olive Green Knitted Scarf. The scarf looked beautifully warm, and very soft. Oh, thats Ryan in the other photo, Kelsi's neck is not that hairy.

Kelsi and Ryan were eager to show me a wonderful collection of environmentally friendly jewelry, brooches, scarves, photography, art, and more. Here are some Photos one of a unique brooch, and another of a pair of Big Green Bulb Earrings.

Where are the Sand Pot Candles?

I am bringing back the original Sand Pot Candle design with a few improvements. The original Sand Pot candle used paraffin wax to bond with the sand thus creating a unique container for the scented palm wax. I attempted to make a total palm wax sand pot, the candle failed to pass critical tests. Will I try to resolve these design problems? No, the problem can not be fixed. There are certain characteristics associated with paraffin wax that make the Sand Pot possible. Instead I have decided to offer the Sand Pot Candle using the original design with a couple of minor modifications: 1. The sand pot wall will be increased in thickness. 2: The wick will no longer go through the sand pot. Instead I will use a tabbed wick, where the tab is affixed to the inside bottom of the pot and the palm wax filled around it. This is a typical construction technique used in regular container candle manufacture.
These changes will result in a more robust product with increased safety considerations. This has been done in accordance with my policy at Candles by Donald to continually evaluate products in an effort to insure quality, and safety. I hope you will all give the new Sand Pot Candles the support you continue to give all my products. Welcome Home, at first I thought, "what an odd name for a candle fragrance". The fragrance description changed my mind; toasted graham crackers, vanilla frosting, creamy caramel, and juicy raisins. While growing up, these are some of the things I remember about coming home, my favorite treats. I was probably no different than any other kid. On a cool day after school, I would come home to some graham crackers and a glass of milk. Then there were the special times when my mother baked a cake and frosted it with vanilla butter cream frosting. On those days when I opened the door the smell of baking would say "Welcome Home". Eucalyptus scented handmade natural palm wax pillar candle

A handmade natural palm wax pillar candle can be the perfect gift during the cold and flu season. This is especially true for a natural palm wax pillar candle scented with the fragrance Eucalyptus. The aromatic natural palm wax pillar candle is 3 inches in diameter, 4 1/2 inches tall and weighs approximately one pound. In this candle, I combined premium Eucalyptus candle fragrance oil with a pure natural Eucalyptus essential oil and added the 50/50 blend to the natural palm wax at a level equal to 6% of the total wax weight. This is the maximum recommended by the manufacturer. During cold and flu season, this candle can make breathing much more comfortable for some people. You see, the koala bear is not the only mammal that craves this aromatic leaf and its oil. People love this scent also, for opening up sinuses and clearing a stuffy head during the cold and flu season. The hot and cold scent throw is very good. After lighting the candle, the fragrance will find it way into every corner of a small room. The rich lime green color of this candle combines with the silvery lime green surface crystal formations common to this very special premium natural palm wax pillar blend. Palm wax is excellent for making pillars. The candles will burn with no soot or smoke, and longer than similar size paraffin candles. I love the unique surface features characteristic for this type of wax. Each candle is one of a kind with its fine detailed surface crystal patterns. When burning a palm wax pillar keep the wick centered within the candle diameter and burn no more than 2 – 2 1/2 hours at a time for a 3 inch diameter candle. Allow the candle to cool then trim the wick to approximately 3/16 to 1/4 inches if needed. Since the wicks I use are engineered to self trim I recommend trimming only when absolutely necessary. A wall will remain as the candle burns down allowing the light from the flame to produce an interesting effect as it shines through the crystal laden walls and candle body. Eventually as the candle burns down the walls will slowly erode leaving little waste. Any unburned wax can be used in a wax heater and the wonderful aromas will continue for those of you wanting to get 100% use from your natural palm wax pillar candle purchase. I use this candle in my indoor studio (back room) where I package, and wrap candles. The candle works great for me when I get a "stuffy" nose. It gently opens up my sinus's. I think the candle is sweeter and not as harsh smelling with this 50/50 blend. Stop by my store and look at this candle and my other candles. There is a great deal to see.

A handmade premium scented natural palm wax pillar candle at a reasonable price. This natural palm wax pillar candle is scented with a new candle fragrance at Candles by Donald called Pumpkin Creme Brulee. Pumpkin Creme Brulee is best described as having notes of creamy pumpkin puree, ground cinnamon, cardamom, Vermont maple, French vanilla, and caramelized sugar. The aroma off this candle is so yummy I find myself going back to smell it repeatedly. The candle has a light good cold throw and excellent hot throw. The manufacturer lists the throw for this fragrance as excellent. The one pound candle is 3 inches in diameter and 4 1/2 inches tall and made with a premium blend natural palm wax. This particular natural palm wax displays a beautiful surface crystal feather pattern as the wax cools slowly. I have selected a candle wick specifically designed for palm wax and engineered to self trim. Trim the candle wick 3/16 to 1/4 inches only when necessary to reduce the flame or prevent the candle from flickering wildly, a little flicker is okay. Keep the wick centered within the candle diameter. Burn the candle in an area absent of drafts for 2 to 2.5 hours or approximately 50 minutes per inch of diameter. As the candle burns down a wall will form around the flame containing the wax pool. A nice special effect is given by the flame shining through the crystallized walls of the candle. Palm wax is an excellent material for making pillar candles. Your candles will burn with no soot and no smoke. Those accidental wax spills are easily cleaned up with hot soapy water. The palm wax I use is an E friendly material.

My son Gabe requested that I write down some of the stories about my life. I have hundreds of stories so the task is not a small one. First are stories about Vietnam and my service with the 170th Assault Helicopter Company during my 1 year tour of duty. Since like so many Vietnam vets I suffer from PTSD, something I do not believe you get over, but something you learn to live with. Telling some of the stories helps me deal with the past, although I have nothing I need to be ashamed of. I think it is mostly the stress of day to day combat missions and the long hours, and not knowing if you will ever make it home. The moments of being so scared you are too scared to be scared. How about that for double talk, but it is the truth. Saying I was not afraid would be an outright lie, I was a crew chief in a Huey. Do you know how easy it is to hit a Huey with small arms fire, well you probably do not, but judging from the number of times I had bullet holes in my aircraft it must be damn easy. After receiving many inquiries about a mosquito repellent candle, Candles by Donald created a natural palm wax pillar candle that will repel these annoying little insects. Testing continues in other areas beside where I live. Tests results are good in my area, the candle keeps the mosquitoes under control and smells good. The candle is scented with a blend of 3 essential oils: Lemongrass, Cedarwood, and Eucalyptus. All three of these essential oils are known to be effective mosquito repellents. The candle has a crisp clean lemon fragrance with a cederwood following. Tzipi

Tzipi is a 20 year old Flutterbutt, fresh out of the army. She spent the last few weeks of her service, like so many other Israelis, dreaming of a great tour of the world. Upon hearing that the world class Puppeteer Sharona was conducting interviews for just the kind of tour she wanted. Tzipi applied, and accepted to take part in this great adventure.
Tzipi is a strong willed, highly competent young Flutterbutt. She enjoys hiking, biking, swimming, diving, and many other outdoor activities. She also loves the theater.
Arriving from New Zealand, Tzipi was such a chatterbox with so many stories about her great adventure. She is a character.
After a day of rest she was anxious to help me in the garden. My squash was ready for harvest and I needed help. Tzipi jumped to my assistance and together we gathered a bountiful harvest. The rest of the day was spent poolside and enjoying a fantastic day.

Soapy Blessings by Trish a Family Affair

This week I would like to introduce you to Trish, and her wonderful lovingly prepared soaps. Soapy Blessings by Trish all started years ago with a fictional story. The main character in the story made soaps in order to survive a civil war in her Latin American country. In the story the main character prayed over every soap to bring healing and peace to everyone they touched. A new candle product has been added to the Aromatherapy Series line at Candles by Donald. The natural palm wax pillar candle is scented with the essential oil Lemongrass. The 3 inch diameter, 4 1/2 inches tall pillar throws the strong scent from the essential oil Lemongrass fragranced candle very well. Almost immediately my small 11' X 12' indoor studio was filled with the smell of lemon. Lemongrass smells just like its name suggests, Lemon and grass. Or just like the actual plant Lemongrass with its grass like similarity.
A handmade natural palm wax pillar candle scented with the essential oil Lemongrass becomes the second member of the aromatherapy series offered at Candles by Donald. Lemongrass smells just like the name suggests with strong, crisp, clean aromatic characteristics. In aromatherapy, lemongrass oil is used to treat acne, relieve muscle pain, indigestion, headaches, stress and nervous exhaustion. The essential oil Lemongrass is also used to repel insects such as fleas, lice, ticks and mosquitoes as an added benefit. Natural palm wax is the perfect wax for making pillar candles in my opinion. The surface although covered with a most intense crystal feather pattern is hard and smooth to the touch. The candle burns clean with no soot or smoke. The wick I have used is engineered to self trim in palm wax. Trim the wick only when necessary to control flame height. Burn the candle 2-2.5 hours maximum with each lighting or approximately 50 minutes per inch of diameter, extinguish the candle and allow to cool before relighting. Keep the wick centered while burning to get maximum performance from your candle purchase. The candle is shrink wrapped to preserve the wonderful fragrance; unwrap before lighting. I have added a custom designed label to the outside of the wrapping with the scent name and Candles by Donald logo. This candle is packaged to make a nice gift to someone special or to yourself, certainly someone special. All candles are shipped using the Priority Mail System 2-3 day offered by the USPS. One fine day I was sitting on a bench along Main Street in a small town called Etsy. I noticed a person walking on the other side of the street. This person stopped to look in a shop window at the many items on display. After a few moments he turned crying and sobbing openly as he continued his walk. Another person walking also turned to look in the store window. She turned after letting out a burst of uncontrolled laughter and continued her walk down Main Street, giggling to herself all the way.

What kind of store could bring such extreme responses as I had just witnessed? I was unable to read the sign over the store front window from my bench seat on the opposite side of the street. The store seemed relatively busy with people entering and exiting through the old fashioned single door in front. More people stopped to stare in the window and as they continued their walks each seemed to exhibit emotions that varied between sadness and joviality.

Curious, I left the comfortable bench and crossed the street to take a closer look at the emotion provoking display. The store front window was filled with greeting cards. Every occasion, holiday, and event had a card with a cover describing the function through art, or photography. The sign over the store front window display said “LindaButterfly Cards and Art”.

As my eyes went from one card to another and another I thought, what’s in a card? There is plenty; memories, feelings and dreams are in a card, as I answered my own question. A card can raise a tear, paint a smile, bring people together, announce an event, celebrate a beginning, or acknowledge an ending. A card is a messenger in a thought or emotion provoking cover. A photograph, drawing, or artwork can set the mood and define the cards purpose. At first glance a card seems like something small and inexpensive. Does this fact make a card less of a gift or not as meaningful? A quality card like those in this store front window can resurrect memories and bring an emotional response far more valuable than any other type of gift.

Before long I found myself opening the door, and much to my surprise I found two shops inside. Now this is different, yet it works and works well I thought. One shop LindaButterfly was just cards. Display after display of cards each ready for a message to accompany the cover.

I turned my gaze to the other store, LindaCaterpillar, a collection of paintings and photographs. Along the walls larger paintings, drawings, and artwork were displayed. At the center of the room were three rows of display shelves. The shelves were part of a tier system which made viewing the smaller paintings, drawings, ACEO’s (art, cards, editions, and originals)and other items much easier.

I decided to go into the LindaButterfly virtual store first since I spotted an interesting card already. “Look at all these cards”, I said quietly to myself. “Sir, what did you say”, said a voice from behind the display in a distinctly British accent. “There are so many cards” I said. “Yes, I try to provide a good selection, something for every occasion”, she replied as she appeared in front of me, this lady with a big warm smile. “Hello, I am Linda”, she greeted me. “Is there something special you need or would you like to just look around?” “Just one question; all of the cards I have looked at are beautiful on the outside, but with no writing on the inside, why?” “Good question, the card cover has different meanings. This way each person who buys a card can write something appropriate to the occasion at hand. Possibly to convey a meaningful personal message or recount some past experience”. She paused a moment, “The individual can make a card so much more than just a card. Look around, enjoy the store, ask and I will help you.” I thought to myself; this is somebody who really enjoys making greeting cards.

Later, after talking to Linda about her store and original greeting cards, I discovered that she is a retired school teacher; now she pursues her dreams, feelings and visions as a writer, artist, and photographer. Linda the Artist is a person who creates images that reflect her love of beauty, and life with all its color and texture. This is obvious as I look at greeting cards, note cards, and postcards each with one of Linda’s paintings, drawings or photographs printed on the front cover.

Imagine how someone you know would feel upon receiving one of these beautiful cards with a personal message carefully penned inside. Think about yourself writing a message that resurrects an old memory about a person, relative, place, vacation, or a shared moment. When you take the time to exchange heartfelt sympathies, feelings and thoughts, the card becomes a priceless treasure. LindaButterfly is no ordinary card store; no, there is nothing ordinary about this treasure trove of Art covered vehicles each having the potential to carry a meaningful message to a loved one or friend.

I walked along the display until the cards with original paintings as front covers suddenly changed to beautiful photographs. Row upon row, card after card is displayed on the shelves, each one with a photograph taken by Linda and printed on the cover. There is nothing boring about this photography with images of people, life, places, things, and more. In our earlier conversion, Linda mentioned long walks with camera in hand. During these walks there is not much that escapes the lens of her camera. “There is so much to see all we have to do is look,” she said. Linda the photographer is much like the artist as she captures the image for a moment in time. Look is exactly what I proceeded to do and here are just a few examples of the front cover images on the cards displayed:

Linda’s vision for thought provoking imagery is uncanny, to say the least. You probably see as I do from these 6 photographs; let’s compare notes. I see a card for peace and tranquility, the bird lover, a hunter, someone into sewing, a walker, the gardener, a yachtsman and so much more. It is easy to understand why the card inside flap is left blank, awaiting the thoughtful and appropriate response. I continued to browse the bountiful selection of greeting cards, and enjoy a rollercoaster ride of emotions with memories as the catalyst. Cards, cards and more cards, I must remember to purchase some before I leave. Excuses? I have none left after my tour of this incredible store.

I glanced at the time, it was late and I still needed to spend some time in Linda’s other store LindaCaterpillar. As I headed down the aisle I nearly knocked over a display stand of magnets. Wait, magnets? What is this? These are beautiful; my refrigerator could become a control center with an artistic flair. The refrigerator door in our house is information central with grocery lists, doctor appointments, repairmen’s business cards, prescriptions to be filled, and “to do lists” all held in place by an indiscriminant collection of magnets. Linda has enclosed small photographs and copies of her artwork in glass with two super magnets affixed to the back. I can see it now, our refrigerator door with these colorful magnets holding up for display the day to day information that we need. Look at this wonderful way of bringing art into our everyday lives.

Once again I remembered the time, and headed over to the store featuring drawings and paintings by Linda.

By now, I am overwhelmed by this artist’s skill and yet there is still more to see as I enter the store LindaCaterpillar. Pastel drawings, watercolor and acrylic paintings hang from the walls while on shelves are displayed miniature works of art called ACEO’s. “Donald, are you enjoying my works?” a voice from behind me said. I replied “Yes, but where do you get all these ideas?” Linda thought for a moment and said “I generally get hundreds of ideas and execute a very small proportion of them. My love of beauty, color, texture, intricacies, and life help me sort of feel the painting. Then I see it. It becomes an urgency to get the emotion of the painting out onto paper. I see the picture on the paper and simply paint what I see.” “You make it sound so simple,” I replied thanking her, and continued to look at painting after painting. This is Linda the Artist, expressing her emotions and feelings through her paintings, drawings, and photography. Here are some of my favorites:

Not long ago I was browsing in a card shop called “LindaButterfly cards and art”, http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5056461 If you have never been in this shop, do yourself a favor: GO! Back to my story, as I look at all the beautiful cards one particular card caught my eye. WOW! instantly propelled back in time, vision of me looking in the window of a store as my Dad opened the front door. A large sign lay just inside “The Village Bakery”. My Dad, a carpenter was assisting my uncle (a baker)remodeling an old bakery my Grandfather, a baker used to own and run. This old bakery would soon be reopened under a new name "Katrina's Pastry Shop". Vision, old photo’s of my grandmother fixing up the front window with the beautiful pastries. This was a time where people walked downtown looking in the enticing store windows. Inside the sweet smell from sugared delights and the aroma of fresh baked bread. The old glass cases filled with pies, cakes, cookies, and much more. What’s in a card, plenty.

Aromatherapy comes to Candles by Donald

Aromatherapy is the ancient practice of using the essences from natural plant essential oils to promote health and wellbeing. These pure essential oils are cold pressed or steam distilled from flowers, fruit, bark and roots. Aromatherapy can be used to relieve the discomforts, aches, and pains from a variety of health problems. It also acts on the central nervous system to help ease the symptoms of depression, fatigue, anxiety, and stress. That Evening It Was A Long Flight Home

The year was 1966 -1967, a year I spent in Vietnam as a crew chief on a Huey. My home base was Camp Holloway in Pleiku. Every day was different for me as we took on any mission, any task; that was the way of the 170^th AHC. The story is about one evening, an evening after a day of back breaking work hauling supplies and troops.

We were finally heading home, it was a long day. I sat back in the left seat, rested, and enjoyed the cool air rushing in the open door. I heard the pilot make a call on the radio. In short, he would ask any of the nearby bases if there was anybody needing a lift to Pleiku. This evening there was an answer, passengers going to Camp Holloway. Our instructions were to land on the helipad next to the First Aid tent. “What is your ETA” said the voice over the radio. Lieutenant Willis answered “10 minutes”.

It was getting dark as we landed on the well marked pad. A medic ran out to talk to the pilot, he asked “how many passengers can you take”, Willis turned to me as if to ask. I indicated with five fingers. “We can take 5 passengers” the lieutenant told the Medic. The medic returned with help, each pair of soldiers carried a body bag. Each bag was a fallen comrade in arms, and handled with great care. I watched as the medics loaded each bag on to the deck of my ship. Carefully sliding three of the bags across the deck, and placing the next two bags across the three, ever so carefully.

We took off and headed for Camp Holloway. I sat back in the left seat, in the quiet, the air rushing through the open doorway. I glanced down; the tags attached to the handle on the end of each bag caught my eye as they flapped in the wind. Each tag with a name printed neatly, each tag with the name of the soldier inside. I thought of their families, loved ones and all the sadness. I sat and stared at the bags, the men. Soon I turned, leaned back against the bulkhead and began to cry. It was a long flight home.

The candle is a handmade natural palm wax pillar candle strong scented with the candle fragrance, Frankincense and Myrrh. The natural palm wax pillar candle is 3 inches in diameter, 4 1/2 inches tall and weighs one pound. The palm wax pillar candle scent is an enchanting aromatic blend of frankincense and myrrh with hints of balsam, spice, patchouli and sandalwood. This candle fragrance is infused with essential oils. The wick is engineered to self trim; cut 3/16 to 1/4 inches only when necessary to prevent wild flickering and to lower the flame; a little flicker is okay. Keep the wick centered within the diameter of the candle. Allow a wall to form around the wax pool as the candle burns down. A nice special effect will be visible as the flame shines through the crystal laden walls and candle body. To summarize the performance tips given so far: burn the candle in an area absent from drafts, keep the wick centered within the candle diameter, and insure a wick length 3/16 to 1/4 inches before lighting. This candle has been “shrink” wrapped to preserve freshness. A custom designed label with the scent name on it has been applied to the outside of the shrink wrap. Burning instructions and tips will accompany each candle order making this an excellent gift for the holidays or any special occasion.

   There is a special Shoppe, an oasis for the body and inner being, called GoodeGear. This store specializes in what I call “feel good” tools to rejuvenate our inner and outer selves. First allow me to introduce Nancy Goode. Nancy is the artisan who creates all of the unique natural items you will find in this well stocked store. As the crisp cool mornings announce the beginning of the fall season in some of our climates others can only hope the change will come soon. Here in Florida the change has only happened in my mind. I know it is only a matter of days until the mornings change from sweltering heat and high humidity to something a little cooler and a little less humid. My wife has started to decorate with cornucopias and garlands of autumn colored leaves. At my candle store Candles by Donald on the Artfire handmade shopping network, the change of seasons is greeted by beautiful pillar candles in fall colors and scents. This year Amish Harvest scented palm and paraffin candles abound for your home decorating needs. For customers interested in a paraffin wax pillar I have created an eye catching red, yellow and orange streaked beauty. Amish Harvest, the candle fragrance, is best described as a warm spicy scent with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and more. Strong and sweet this candle scent leaves a desire to smell it again and again.

Since we are on the subject of paraffin candles, lets discuss cleaning. Yes, dusting off those treasures left over from last year that you just could not burn. With a clean moist paper towel or soft cloth gently wipe any dust or dirt off the candle surface. For heavily soiled surface, rinse out the cloth or change the paper towel often until the candle surface is clean. The clean candle can now be polished. Polishing will breathe new life into that tired looking paraffin wax candle. Using a damp paper towel or very soft cotton cloth (old soft cotton tee shirt) , polish the candle surface using small circular movements. Continue polishing until the entire surface is done. Now using the damp cloth or paper towel polish using horizontal strokes and watch the shine come out. When the candle is completely polished buff out the finger prints and increase the shine by grasping the cloth ends, one for each hand and move the cloth or towel gently across the candle surface to finish polishing the candle.

As I strolled down the virtual path I noticed what appeared to be a quaint little shop not that far ahead. As the sign over the doorway came into view I read “Rachael’s Gardenbeautifully hand painted crafts”. I noticed the door was ajar and the “open” sign was out. It looked very inviting inside this virtual shop so I opened the door a little wider and entered. A voice said “Hello”, “hello”. Having been distracted by the amazing array of craft creations on display, I finally responded to the third hello. “Rachael?” I asked. “Oh no, my name is Karen. The store is named after my daughter” she said and welcomed me to look around. I had already started; after all it did take three “hello’s” to get my attention away from the floor to ceiling assortment of the most colorful array of birdhouses. Birdhouses were on hooks, perched on tall poles, short poles, hung from the ceiling, and set on tables for display.Round ones, and square ones, pointed roofs, slanted roofs, flat roofs, one door, two doors, three doors, and much, much more; was the unbelievable assortment. “There are so many beautiful bird homes” I said. “What?”came the voice from the back of the shop. There sat Karen in a chair carefully putting the finishing touches on the sides of her latest birdhouse creation. My gaze turned to the back wall and a large sign “Artisan Made Birdhouses and Whimsical Folk Home Décor”. “I know you paint the birdhouses, but who builds all of the unique designs”? “I do”, Karen said, “in a small woodworking shop out back.” I continued to take a closer look; so many different styles. The materials seem so varied and of high quality. I quickly realized the materials are recycled, that explains the dry aged wood; there is nothing better to build things with. She used metal, wood scraps, old hardware, even tree bark, and various kinds of high quality materials all clean and safe for our little friends. “I’m curious, how do you know these designs will work?”, I asked. “Look out the window” was her answer. And there, set up against a small wetlands area and all across the backyard, was every type of bird house displayed in her store and then some. “The guests seemed so happy” I said. “You are all too right”, she went on to explain “as more and more areas are developed, brush cleared and old trees cut down a substitute for their old habitat is needed; the birdhouse. If you build it, they will come”. “Ah, thank you now I see”.

I continued to work my way around hand-painted tissue box covers, lattice letter holder/bill organizers, wall hangings, and signs. Yes signs, hand-painted of course, indoor/outdoor for a cabin, cottage, shed, house, or summer home. “Custom orders welcome” a small card set in the open started me thinking, “now where could I use one of these great looking signs”. I had been so caught up in the birdhouse bounty that I failed to notice this incredible selection of folk home décor items. My gaze fell on a large selection of folk art prints, all made from original painted works by this artist. Since having been a volunteer fireman in an all volunteer department, my eyes were drawn to a beautiful print of an original painting by Karen, “My Little Red Fire Truck". As fire trucks go this was a real beauty. Soon my vision became unglazed and I returned to the present as more prints of original paintings appeared. “Jack’s Little Green Tractor”, “Mickey’s Old Yellow Dump Truck”, “Owen’s Blue Quad Four Wheeler”, “Little Mixer”, and everyone of them a beauty. There was a chair by the counter I needed to sit down, so many memories brought back by these beautiful creations. As I sat something out of my past appeared on the wall; up high in the corner another print made from an original painting by Karen, a folk rendition of Nubble lighthouse, a place known well to me above and below the water. I had completed many dives in the clear cold waters adjacent to the lighthouse. Print after print of beautiful folk art, and all reflected a similar theme; faith, family, community, honesty and an appreciation for the simple things in life. I looked at my watch, hours had past for me, but such glorious hours they were. “Karen, thank you for an afternoon well spent, and I will be back.” “I know you will” she said with that wonderful warm smile that greeted me earlier. Signature Series “Type III” Mulberry scented Palm Wax filled Sand Pot Candle

Candles by Donald is offering a Sand Pot Candle (Signature Series, type III), a different kind of sand candle. I have cast a container in sand with highly refined paraffin wax. This particular wax has the following characteristics: moderately high melt point, very hard, and a thin consistency allowing it to bond well with the fine sand. The result is a beautiful container made of wax and sand. This signature series sand pot candle is of the type III variety. The “type III” sand pots feature a brass embellishment and pedestal base. The base is carved from the rough casting; creating a much more shapely version of the original sand pot. Much more difficult to carve the sand pot candles will always result in a shipping weight greater than 4 pounds due to the extra weight from the pedestal. The brass piece was purchased in a great place to shop for brass, findings and many other treasures, NancMacFindings. The sand pot container is filled with a high quality palm wax container blend and scented with the candle fragrance oil "Mulberry". This is a light, uplifting fruity scent that gives the candle a strong aroma both hot and cold. Another very beautiful creation from “Candles by Donald” that is sure to enhance your spring time décor. Keep the candle out of drafts, and the wick centered within the sand pot candle diameter to get the best performance from this candle. The candle wick is engineered to self trim, and specifically designed for use with palm wax. Only when absolutely necessary should you trim the wick. For example wild flickering, burning too hot, and burning too fast or as simple as much too bright. I have trimmed the wick for you, just light and enjoy. The thick white protrusion under the shrink wrap is a plastic sleeve to protect the wick, remove before lighting the candle. The sand pot is painted using non toxic acrylic paints and coatings. I use high quality materials in all of my work. The wax pool is 3 3/8 inches in diameter. This beautiful candle with a wonderful scent and "earthy" look weighs 2 Lbs. 9.5 oz. to which I added 13.5 ounces of highly scented palm wax bringing the total sand pot candle weight to 3 Lbs 7 oz. The sand pot candle stands 4 1/4 inches tall, and 5 inches in diameter at its widest point (leaf stamping). All of my candles are "one of a kind", each individually cast, hand carved, and signed by the artist. When care is taken burning sand pot candles, the sand pot container can be reused many times. Pillar Candle Suggested Safety and Burning Instructions

Candles by Donald has an updated candle burning and safety instruction sheet.

These will be provided with every purchase. It has always been my position

that safety comes first when burning candles. If there is anything I should add,

please let me know and we will add the guideline to this group.

1. Carefully remove shrink wrapping from the candle before burning. Insure that

the wick is cut to approximately 3/16 to 1/4 inches before lighting the candle.

2. Always use a pillar candle holder, stand, or plate when burning a pillar candle.

Avoid wax spill problems, always use a candle dish.

3. A general rule is burn a paraffin candle 1 hour per inch diameter. For example burn

a 3 inch diameter pillar for approximately 3 hours or less. Always extinguish

candle before flame causes breakthrough in the candle wax pool wall.
*** A general rule for Palm Wax candles is to burn the candle 50 minutes per inch of diameter or for a 3 inch diameter 2 1/2 hours. This is a maximum, as palm wax candles do not have a memory there is no minimum time to burn them. With a palm wax pillar the idea is to cause the candle to "tunnel" or form a wall around the flame. This will set the candle up for a lantern effect with the flame shinning through the crystal laden walls.

4. Keep the wick centered allowing the candle to burn even. A centered wick is

extremely important when burning a palm wax pillar candle. Adjust wick

position to cause an even thickness wax pool wall. When burning pillar candles

this will maximize the burn time and increase the candles efficiency.

5. Burn candles in areas free of drafts. Drafts cause the candle to burn wildly and

out of control. Drafts can be caused by fans, open windows, air conditioning or

heating vents.

6. Keep the wax pool area free of debris. This debris will choke and clog the

wick causing it to burn in an irregular manner.

7. Prior to lighting the candle trim the wick if needed; a wick that is to long will

cause the candle to smoke. All the things I have mentioned shorten the burn

times and make a mess.

8. Keep your candle clean. Both palm and paraffin wax candles can be cleaned

using a damp soft cloth or paper towel. Simply wipe the soiled surfaces clean.

9. In closing the most important safety suggestion is NEVER LEAVE A

BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED.

In this offer I have for sale a 3 inch dia. X 4 1/2 inch tall pillar candle scented with that all time kitchen favorite scent “Vanilla”. This “Vanilla” fragrance is best described as, go to the kitchen and hope there is a vanilla cake with butter cream frosting, unwrap and smell. This scent smells just like sweet vanilla extract, with a hint of fresh creamy butter. The hot and cold scent throw is very good, certainly a room sized fragrance. This is white with a hint of gold colored candle (sort of an “off-white”) with silvery white on the peaks and ridges of the surface crystal formations. The color in the photos is very much the color of the candles I am offering. All of candles are very similar in appearance to the photos differing only surface crystal patterns. The photos are of one candle from those that I have in stock. I have shrink wrapped the candle to preserve its freshness. A metallic safety label is included, and affixed to the bottom of the candle. This label may remain on the candle while burning. I have attached a custom designed label to the shrink wrapping. This label is the name of the scent on a nicely designed background. As you can tell this is a nicely packaged candle and would certainly make a wonderful gift. I have used a premium fragrance, and blend of palm wax. Burn the candle for approximately 3-4 hours, trying not to allow the heat to break through the wax wall. Extinguish the candle and relight after the wax has cooled. New Candle Scent Welcome "Macintosh Apples", New Candle Prices in my Artfire Store Only

Candles by Donald is offering a 3 inch dia. X 4 ½ inch tall pillar scented with a fragrance called “Macintosh Apples” (candle only). This strong classic fragrance is described as the aroma from Macintosh apples “right from the tree”. The manufacturer has said that this fragrance oil was two years in the making; they wanted a true Macintosh Apple scent. I say, “they did it!” I have colored this candle a robust Macintosh apple red that develops a silvery hue at the ridges of the crystal effects. This effect is characteristic for Palm Wax and very beautiful. Burning with little or no soot, Palm wax is a fantastic material for making candles. The candle has a terrific cold and hot fragrance throw, and weighs one pound. I have sized the wick to create a thin wall around the flame as the candle burns down. A very nice effect is given off by the flame shinning through the crystal loaded candle walls and the body of the candle. Eventually the wall will erode and be consumed by the candle. It is very important to keep the wick centered in order to maximize this effect and get the longest burn times from the candle. All the candles I have in stock are very similar to the photos but not exact, there will be slight variations in the crystal pattern. The wax has a very different feel to it, and an awesome appearance due to the crystal formations on the surface of the candle. I have shrink wrapped the candle to preserve its freshness. A metallic safety label is included, and affixed to the bottom of the candle. This label may remain on the candle while burning. I have attached a custom designed label to the shrink wrapping. This label is the name of the scent and includes a short description. As you can tell this is a nicely packaged candle and would certainly make a wonderful gift. Burn this candle much like any other candle. Use the following guidelines to get the most out of your purchase:

Two Shops make the First Type II Signature Series Sand Pot Candle a Reality

I needed to come up with a smaller version of my signature series sand pot candle. The new version is called Type II. In addition to being smaller, sports a beautiful brass embellishment. The new sand pot is slightly smaller with a finished candle shipping weight less than 4 pounds. The new design also needed a brass embellishment. For the brass feature I turned to NancMacFindings for assistance. Nancy worked very hard digging through boxes of beads, brass, chains, clasps, and other findings to find me something nice. What am I saying! All of her findings are nice, beautiful to say the least. I should say, something that could be added to the exterior of the sand pot to give it that special PIZAZZ. The next group of Sand Pot Candles will all have embellishments from Nancy’s store NancMacFindings. I encourage you to visit, look around, and if you don’t see what you want, talk to Nancy. Signature Series, Type II Sand Pot Candles Get Some Help

Hello, I have something new I am going to try. I recently contacted NancMacFindings a store specializing in findings including brass stampings. Nancy, had some interesting brass stampings and pendents. I found a few from her regular stock and put them in reserve. Nancy offered to look at some of her unlisted stock for more brass stampings. I really like this, a person willing to spend extra time with a customer in order to supply choices. Nancy came up with some beautiful brass stampings made with untreated old brass. These types of embellishments when added to the exterior of a sand pot candle, give the candle something even more unique. Sand Pot Candles with these brass embellishments are truly one of a kind and provide a wonderful addition to ones home decor. I decided to add this brass to a new variation of the signature series sand pot candles. Although the signature series candle are beautiful they are just a little heavy. Candles by Donald would offer a different type and style of Sand pot Candle. This "Type II" sand pot candle would be lighter and smaller. The shipping weight needed to be under 4 pounds. This could be done without compromising the improvements accomplished through the Signature Series sand pots.

   The story took place on an island in the middle of a large lake located in between the Ossipee and Belknap mountains. For me, this was and still is the most beautiful place in the world, and where my story began. I was hired at a lodge as the speed boat driver. Along with my duties as boat driver, I was the bartender, plumber, painter, fishing guide, Maytag repairman, carpenter, valet, garlic chopper, cheese grater and everything else laborer. The story revolved around the site of a new dock to be built. Gus and his wife owned the lodge and hired me. Their daughter was having a cottage built just off to the left and around the shore from her parents lodge. This true story is about one phase in the building of the dock she used for tying her boat to. The dock also became a viewing platform overlooking the lake and natures spectacular never ending performance.
     Building a dock was new to me, but not new to Gus. Early one morning, it was always too early; Gus talked to me about building a "great" dock on the other side of the cove. Gus always used the word "great" as he easily verbalized the impossible to a "would be" helper. First move 3 large rocks into the lake to serve as a base for a much larger rock to sit on. Then move this giant rock to a position on top of the first three rocks. The huge car sized rock would sit half submerged, and serve as a focal point for the great dock to rest. A beautiful deck would be built around the huge granite centerpiece. Gus's plan sounded so easy to me, the naïve young man that I was.
     Gus and I carefully carried three chain falls (pulley system used to hoist boats), chains, clamps, hooks, cable, and tools from the boathouse shop through the woods along the shoreline to the first rock that had to be moved. The path was slippery in some spots and rocky in others. The terrain was made even more treacherous by all of the equipment and tools in our arms.
   We must have been a sight, a tall skinny 18 year old, and Gus, a not very tall slightly overweight music teacher. We did not have the appearance of an experienced laborer, and expert rigger; the type of workers you would expect to undertake a construction project like "the great dock". I was young, skinny, and quick to learn. Already having learned that doing anything over such rough terrain was very hard work.
     Gus, in his sixties, did not seem to tire as we moved the heavy pulleys into position, and placed the chain around the first rock we needed to move.           I had worked with Gus before and knew to just follow his direction and an explanation would come soon. These were big rocks about half as big as a car. I remember asking myself; how would all this heavy rock moving be done? It was time to ask the big question. "Gus, how will we do all this heavy lifting"? "Donny, the chain falls will give us a mechanical advantage of 6 to 1", he explained. I listened intently as the explanation had started to make some sense. Little did I know my science class lessons on machines and pulleys would ever be used, and used so soon. Using gravity, machines and leverage we moved the first rock into the lake with ease. This was the first day in three and by far the easiest.
   Gus and I walked back to the lodge; he was totally satisfied with the progress we made and I, completely exhausted.
   As we walked back, my gaze turned across the cove to the white porch surrounding the large two story main house with its comfortable white wicker furniture that looked so inviting. I had been hired for the summer to drive the boat. The boat was a Dodge, a beautiful 28 foot antique speedboat used to provide transportation from the mainland to the island and ferry the guests back and forth to the boys' camp. The opportunity to stay at the lodge and drive the big boat made the hard work easy.
   I went into the kitchen and got a soda for myself and a large glass of ice with water for Gus. Already settled in his favorite chair he contemplated the day's events while looking across the lake to the distant mountains. We all feasted on the beautiful views that the lodge had to offer of this glacial lake. For many afternoons before this one, Gus had looked across the cove to the site of the great dock. The dock site preparation was all figured out, yes, he had a plan "no stone was left unturned", literally. We talked some about how the dock would be built before he nodded off, taking a short nap in his favorite chair.
   As the dinner meal was prepared by family and help, I headed into the boathouse to get the boat ready. I liked everything to run smoothly with the boat and I treated the Ranger like she was mine; it was my job. I drove over to the camp front dock and picked up the guests an hour before dinner. The season just started we had some guests, but not a full house. This meant we had time to undertake dock building and other interesting projects.
   I remember how early the next day started for Donny, and how sore I was from the previous days work; boats, breakfast, and drive the guests to the camp dock. I had a busy morning ahead for me. Summer had just begun and the weather was cool in the morning; warming up fast toward noon. A light misty fog moved across lake, on that cool crisp morning. The smell of pine trees, bacon frying, and hot coffee seemed to linger in the air as I cut across the cove to the lodge. The big boat glided by the dock site, and Gus waved happy to see his helper. Soon we would start on that second rock. I walked through the woods to the dock site; the air was rich with pine scent. Gus directed me to set up the chain a slightly different way than for the first rock. I had already learned to follow instructions exactly knowing the job would go faster and easier, if I did. He was an incredible engineer, at first glance you would never have realized the amount of work this music teacher could do. The day went well each rock sliding exactly into place. By now these accomplishments by a sixty six year old man and a skinny kid, had become business as usual. For Gus the word fail did not exist and some of that same attitude was starting to rub off on me.
   A walk through the woods to the lodge and Gus would head for his favorite chair. I poured some water into a tall glass filled with ice and brought it out to him. As I approached him, I noticed how intently he looked out across the lake. It was as if a link or bond existed between him and the lake; she held him very close. It was 1964 and the lake was not developed at all. Quite so quite, not many boats, much of the noise we had came from a couple pairs of loons living in the back cove across from us near the camp. We talked for a while about our successes until he nodded off.
   Soon, I would return with the guests and the air would fill with conversation as everyone waited for dinner. Gus woke up as I returned with a boat full of guests. He would greet everyone as they came onto the porch with that big warm smile. Gus seemed to enjoy meeting people, and conversation abounded as the wonderful aromas from the upcoming evening meal drifted out of the kitchen window. The topics would range from the Arts (music) to Washington and international politics. Gus was part of why people enjoyed staying at the lodge so much; along with the fantastic cooking and the ambiance of the Lake.
   The next day very little work was to be done, Gus was busy at the camp, and I shuttled guests back to the landing as they headed home. As the afternoon came around we did get some time to work on the big rock. I was directed to bring a much longer section of heavy cable as we headed over to the site of the "great" dock. Gus had a new idea for moving the rock. Unlike the other rocks this rock was not near the shore line it was about 10 feet away. Not far you say, for this rock, 10 feet was like 10 miles. We wrapped the stranded cable around the rock; then set the hook from the chain fall into the cable loop. We set the chain fall near a tree that would give us the right direction for the pull. The chain fall was fastened near the base of the tree with a heavy chain. We tensioned the rig a little and left it, our time was up.
   Gus did not walk back with me this evening; instead he decided to spend some time thinking. Everything was okay between us, although we had begun to stretch each others patience. This was hard, tedious work over very rough terrain. I was under constant pressure to stay relatively clean and available for the guests. The boats always came first and Gus would always give way when conflicts occurred. The senior staff of the lodge did a good job of give and take. That is probably why it worked at all.
   I remember looking across to the dock site; there was Gus standing on a large rock near the shore. First he would look at that huge rock, and then moved his gaze down the path the rock would eventually take before coming to rest on top of the three rocks already in place. Now he would look out across the lake and then up to the mountains all the while smoking his pipe. Every few minutes he would say "yes sir". I walked around the shoreline to remind him it was getting dark, but mostly to make sure he did not get hurt in the low light. Back at the lodge, well you know the drill by now. I think we all went to sleep early that night; it had been a busy day.
   The sun and Donny arose at almost the same time. The sun had no help, but I did. I slept in one of the rooms above the kitchen. Gus would use a broom handle to bang on the ceiling and wake me up. I already knew we had to get an early start, there were a few guests coming in around 3 o'clock.
   The walk thru the woods along the shore was all too short for my aching muscles. There it was, looming before us in the morning light, that granite behemoth. I pulled on the chain, the cable tightened, but the rock did not move. We wrapped a chain around the rock and set up another block and tackle system. I pulled on the chain and the whole system became taut. We both pulled on the block and tackles together; the rock did not move. One more block and tackle is all we had. I would go back to the boat house to get more chains, clamps, and hooks. I saw Gus sitting down, near one side of the rock toward the back; he had an idea. As I was about to leave he said, "Donny, get the house jack also", so back I ran. I was getting tired just running back and forth to the boat house.
While I was getting the house jack Gus had started to set up the third block and tackle system. This was fast becoming more than just moving the boulder, yes boulder, this was no longer a rock. I viewed the moving of the rock as a challenge, a conflict between us and this huge mass of stone.
   On my return we finished hooking up the additional chains. Already we had two chains and one cable wrapped around the boulder and the house jack was next. Our block and tackle system gave us a mechanical advantage of 18. It was like 18 men pulling on the boulder every time we tightened up all the chains. I saw immediately what Gus was up to with the house jack. Yes, this was going to work, it had to, we did not have any more tools. Gus worked the house jack, while I tightened the chains, first one then the other. Once all the chains tight, Gus gave the house jack another turn or two. Then I would tighten the chains again; THE ROCK STARTED TO MOVE! At least 2000 pounds of New England granite was starting to roll. We would repeat this process at least a dozen times, before the house jack had reached its highest point. The giant boulder was leaning very precariously exactly in the direction we wanted it to go. We both felt that with one or two pulls on the chain falls; the rock would roll over, slide down the slippery bank and into its final resting place. Gus positioned himself next to one of the chain falls and I on the other. The third block and tackle would serve to help hold the rock from going in the wrong direction. "Ready Gus", I yelled, he nodded and very quietly I thought I heard him say, "Yes sir". We pulled on the chains; we pulled again, and again, and again. The huge behemoth of a boulder rolled over and slid just as planned; then stopped. We both could not believe our eyes, it stopped. The massive rock had come to a halt just as it was entering the lake. Gus muttered something appropriate, and just shook his head. He found the nearest rock to sit on, took out his pipe and had a smoke.
   We talked about the problem at hand, this was serious. Gravity and momentum should have been enough to move the rock all the way into the lake. We noticed that the rock was just hung there, for no apparent reason. Okay let's do it again. We unhooked and unfastened everything. This was a brand new problem.
A voice from the main house echoed across the cove reminding us about the guests arriving soon. I would need time to cleanup.
   We fastened a cable around the boulder and hooked it to the largest block and tackle. The house jack was position under the edge of the rock away from the lake. A few turns on the house jack followed by tensioning of the block and tackle. This time the rock did not move, the house jack could not be turned anymore. Both Gus and I pulled on the chain attached to the block, pulled and pulled. Then the unthinkable happened, the cable broke. Yes, the cable snapped flinging the end through the air and taking a big chunk of bark out of a nearby tree. We were okay, stationed well away from the rock.
Then once again the voice called, "Donny". Gus yelled back "just a few minutes more". I was totally defeated, this was to be the first and only time Gus and I would have words.
   I stormed back to the main house, time had run out. I needed to get cleaned up and ready the boat for the guests. As it turned out not a moment too soon, from the boat house I heard the phone ring. As I backed the 28 foot antique boat out of the boathouse I could not help but notice Gus sitting on a rock smoking his pipe. I pulled out of the cove; he did not wave. The ride to the landing seemed ever so long. I greeted the guests, loaded their luggage, and proceeded to bring them back to the lodge. The boat trip with the guests was a nice break for me. I was still upset over the argument Gus and I got into; was I out of line? A nice boat ride in a beautiful antique speedboat would help me relax. I asked the guests if they would enjoy a little longer trip to the lodge. The scenic route took us around a beautiful island with a pristine beach. The boat flew across the lake as I increased the throttle; I thought "let's see what she will do". The ride was smooth as the boat came to a plane easily and flew across the open water. The Lake was all mine, there was not another boat in sight. This was just the thing I needed to help relax a little and sort things out. As the boat cleared the island the boy's camp came into view. I slowed the boat down just a little as we passed in front of the main dock. The campers were all awestruck by the beautiful "Ranger", her mahogany decks gleaming in the sunlight. Now I slowed the boat down even more to headway speed and entered the cove that the lodge was in, so green, lush, and rocky. I was a little worried for Gus, this was a major defeat. I began my approach to the boathouse, the "Ranger" gliding in front of the huge boulder with Gus still standing there smoking his pipe. I tied up the boat in the boat house and assisted the guests as they climbed out of the boat and onto the boathouse deck. I helped the guests with the luggage and showed them their cabin.
I decided to go stand on the front porch for a moment and check on Gus. The aroma from the kitchen dominated the air while I stood at the railing looking at Gus. He was still standing on a rock, looking at the huge boulder and then out across the lake, so quite. I better go help him get back to the lodge, thinking to myself.
Just then, the almost eerie silence was broken by a grinding sound and Gus yelling "Donny, Donny, the rock is moving". I could see the rock slide into the lake. It appeared to come to rest on top of the three rocks just as planned. What just happened? Gus climbed onto the huge rock; he stood up, and reached into his pocket for his pipe. This man called Gus had done something no other person could have done. In my opinion, Gus used his incredible concentration along with his love for the lake and island to solve the problem standing in the way of accomplishing his dream. Once again his gaze went out across the lake, almost like saying "thank you" for what just happened and I heard him say "Yes Sir".
Too weird you say; believe me, this would not be the last time I would see Gus "do the impossible". The summer of 1964 continued as did the work on the "Great" dock, and Gus taught me a plethora of skills that I would use for many years to come. I think often of that moment in time, the lake, the island, the lodge, and a man called "Gus" one of the great influences in my life.

The New Sand Pot Candles Have Arrived

The candle line is called the

"Signature Series". I will list some of the features:

1. A new more "pot like" shape

2. A significantly increased side wall width, 2/3 of the way into the sand pot the sidewalls will almost double in thickness. How is this done? The inside of the pot is a straight walled cylinder, the pot shape results in an increased sidewall thickness. Why? Increased safety, have there been any problems? no; I just want an extra margin of safety and it is a result of the new shape. I like the pot like shape.

3. An increase in bottom thickness. Why? Increased safety, have there been any problems, no. I added the extra thickness to give the candle a little more weight in the bottom and an increased margin of safety against bottom burnout.

4. Each candle will be signed by me "Donald", initially on a hang tag attached to each sand pot candle. The tag will have the scent name on the front side and on the back side of the label a short definition of a sand pot candle.

5. Each candle Will sport a new style exterior paint job. There will be a candle that should compliment almost any home decor.

The first offering will be in the Artfire store first, sometime this weekend. Eventually they will be listed in the Etsy store. Look them over, I think that whether you are a Sand Pot Candle fan or not, you "will like the way the Sand Pots look". I have more sand pots in production that will be offered as they are completed.

How I did the Floating Candle

How did I do the floating candle? Let’s start with 2 pictures of what I did in the first place, just for the benefit of those who tuned in late.
First I used my graphic and photo editing program, Printshop Deluxe version 21 by Broderbund, to create the background. I set up a canvas for legal size paper. Next I selected a real nice picture of some clouds from the clipart library that comes with the software. In order to prevent the picture from looking elongated when I sized it to the legal sized canvas, I brought it into the project normal size. Once on my canvas I enlarged the photo by pulling one corner of the photo diagonally downward until the top and bottom of the photo fit on the canvas, ignoring the left and right sides. This method will keep the ratio of the photo intact will allowing you to fit at least two sides on the canvas. Now position the photo aligning top and bottom on the canvas allowing the side or sides of the photo to fall off the canvas. Crop the photo so that when done you are left with an undistorted legal sized picture of some clouds. The key word here is “undistorted”, we are creating an illusion. Now, write this file out as a JPEG file and then read it back in after deleting what was on the canvas originally. This will allow you to start from scratch in the crop section of the photo editor. This extra effort will payoff in the end. In order to get a background large enough to accommodate this subject, four legal size pieces of paper will be needed. The four pieces will be taped together creating a 2 X 2 background with four pieces of legal size paper. The legal size photo of clouds we just finished will be divided into 4 equal sized pieces. Using the crop section of the photo editor divide and crop the original photo creating four equal sized pieces. At this time we need to assemble the prints and tape creating a larger than 4 times copy of the original photo without any distortion. There’s that keyword again!

From this point on I will generalize with respect to the various pieces of lawn furniture used to create an outdoor light box. Yes, I said outdoor light box. Obtain a cardboard box at least slightly larger than the backdrop is wide. A box can be used to store your backdrops for future use, and it sits better on the table. I found a box that was about 10 inches deep, but the outer dimensions where almost 30 inches square. Place the box on the edge of a small table, and slide a chair back up against the box so it won’t fall off the table. Insure that the table surface is solid, if not use something to prevent light from coming thru the bottom of the table. Take the beautiful cloud backdrop you just made and tack it to the outside of the box, only tack the top. Remember this is your backdrop so it needs to be tacked to the box high enough to allow the subject to be in the middle. Allow the remainder of the backdrop to drape over the small table, creating a graceful arc between the table and the box. This is how the illusion of no horizon is done. The arc will not appear in the finished photo. This is your outdoor light box, and the sun is your light. Now place the subject, if possible, so that it hides the seam between the sheets of paper. The more seams you hide the less you will have to edit out later. For this example, I am taking a picture of a candle resting on a piece of driftwood. I decide that minimum shadows would be the best. For this time of year around 12:30 is optimal. In other words, the sun is high in the sky. Remember, this whole setup can be moved around a little, so turn the table and all to get what shadows you have to deal with where it is to your advantage. Take lots and lots and lots of pictures; select the best photos for what you need. Using the photo editor within Printshop hide the seams using scratch eliminator. Hint: if the is still a little flaw wear the seam was, use the area blur to cloud up the rest. Now, try this out the first chance you get its fun and very rewarding. Thanks for listening. Every photo editor is different, you will need to adapt and modify this process to fit your software and needs.

In memory of my cousin Katrina who recently passed away very suddenly. I would like to share a moment with you all. Since the both of us suffered from not being able to sleep at night, we would send E-mail s' all night long asking questions and sharing knowledge. Late one night/early one morning I asked a question about shooting photo's against backdrops. She replied with this drawing after a few minutes had passed. The next day I replied with a photo of a honeysuckle candle. She screamed a flurry of profanities followed by congradulations on perfect photo. The next photo I did was of the floating candle, she responded the same way. Always willing to share, I can not thank her enough for all that she gave me.

Katrina, sent me an Email asking that I write an article for her, on exactly "how to do the floating candle". She was an artist and a good friend, alway helping others.
